How to Differentiate Between Carbon Steel Flanges and Stainless-Steel Flanges?
Flanges are essential components in industrial pipelines, and carbon steel and stainless steel are commonly employed materials. What methods can differentiate between carbon steel and stainless-steel flanges?
Typical materials used in the manufacture of carbon steel and stainless-steel flanges.
Common materials utilized in the production of carbon steel flanges include 20#, A3, Q235, Q235A, Q235B, A105, etc. Due to their comparatively low manufacturing costs, favorable mechanical characteristics, and capacity to withstand pressure, carbon steel flanges are widely employed in the construction of fluid pipelines, constituting a significant portion thereof.
Commonly utilized materials for producing stainless steel flanges include 304, 304L, 316, 316L, S30408, S30403, S31608, S31603, TP321, 06Cr19Ni10, 00Cr17Ni14Mo2, 1Cr18Ni9Ti, 06Cr17Ni12Mo2, 022Cr17Ni12Mo2, and others. From the names of stainless steel materials, it's evident that stainless steel contains chemical elements such as Cr, Ni, etc., which provide corrosion resistance properties, preventing rust formation.
Ways to differentiate between carbon steel flanges and stainless steel flanges:
The initial approach is visual inspection. The color disparity between carbon steel and stainless steel flanges is discernible. Stainless steel flanges typically exhibit a smoother surface texture compared to the rougher surface of carbon steel flanges. This contrast becomes evident when comparing flanges of differing materials side by side.
The second approach is the drip rusting test. If the surface of the carbon steel flange lacks galvanization and anti-rust paint, wipe off any surface oil and then drip water onto the flange. Within a few hours, a carbon steel flange will exhibit noticeable yellowish-brown rust. In contrast, only a watermark will remain on a stainless steel flange, with no signs of rust.
The third approach is the liquid reagent inspection method. This involves using a stainless steel-specific liquid reagent, which only reacts with stainless steel flanges. The material can be confirmed based on any color change and the timing of discoloration.
The fourth method employs a direct-reading spectrometer. This is a commonly employed method among flange manufacturers for accurately identifying flange materials. However, its relatively high cost limits its widespread adoption.
The aforementioned method is commonly used to differentiate between carbon and stainless-steel flanges. The key disparity between them lies in their rust and corrosion resistance capabilities. Stainless steel exhibits superior resistance compared to carbon steel. However, carbon steel flanges come at a lower cost than their stainless-steel counterparts. The choice between them should be based on the project's specific requirements.
